In the United States, there are more than 75 institutions that offer a graduate program in Cultural Anthropology, a few more than other countries. It is one of the few areas of specialization where the graduates will find an abundance of employment. So why would anyone want to be involved in this area? Anthropology and the related fields, like archaeology, paleontology, linguistics, etc., are interested in the past, to understand the culture of other cultures, and to recreate or explain the past. This could mean that one's culture has been lost or something happened to make it obsolete. Many anthropologists use a combination of artifacts, non-invasive experimentation, and the written word. They may do archaeological fieldwork, analyze the languages of groups, or do similar things with written documents. Other anthropology studies may use the concepts of kinship and matrilineal inheritance. Understanding the process of social relationships is crucial for understanding any culture. A good example is human rights for the world or the elimination of slavery. It will help to know what groups have the right to exist and how they are chosen. The selection of leaders is also part of the cultural anthropology experience. The social perceptions of society will give us a better understanding of what they think of others, and how people behave. Good anthropologists should have excellent communication skills. They should be able to discuss issues of importance in society and find ways to bring about changes in that society. Good research skills can be helpful. People who like to research in historical societies like looking at pictures and getting general information on the clothing, food, and practices that they might encounter in the future. Very little in today's society has to do with food, so this information can be quite valuable. Cultural anthropologists are also in the business of designing museum exhibits. Most museums hold exhibits that mimic something from the cultures they represent. This can be a good experience for the students. Cultural Anthropology is fascinating. If you want to explore other civilizations, cultures, and countries, this is the area of specialization for you. It is one of the few areas of study that allow a student to go into any country and get the perspective that they need.
